- Speaking of Vesey… I wish writer’s would quit saying that he “earned the right” to be a free agent… how exactly did he earn that right? By taking advantage of four years of development and coaching from a franchise only to walk away??? This kid has a lot of growing up to do…

Time out!
Let's not go crazy here.
He DID earn it by prolonging his NCAA career and forgoing the earning he could have made the last few years while getting his degree. He SHOULD be applauded for that to be honest. After hockey he has a brighter future than most.
As far as the development side of your argument... outside of a rookie tournament or a phone call or two... he got all of his coaching and development in NCAA... not with your Preds.
I get it... it sucks to lose him. Same thing happens when teams draft a Russian that doesn't want to continue with them. Like Radu... oh sorry... that was you guys again.

Yes just seems like sour grapes that he didn't want to be a pred. Personally I think the preds offered him the best deal. Legit cup contender. Almost guaranteed top 9 role. And starting his elc contract a year earlier ( if he's good that's worth 4-5 million). For parity sakes the draft makes a lot of sense, but it really is unfair to the individual player not getting to pick where they play and who developments them. Last time I checked we were a free market capitalist system and the draft is really a socialist system that sacrifices individual liberty.

Vessey did earn the right to be a ufa by not accepting a contract from a franchise he didn't want to play with for 4 years. For holding strong and not giving into the temptation of an nhl contract and signing bonus 2 years ago so he can have the right to chose

Agree.
This whole situation has gotten ridiculous though. Pick a frickin team and let's move on. The teams he is interested in changes weekly. This kid better beef up at camp because he is going to have a target on his back. Maybe that's why the Hawks picked up Tootoo ? ?

I think the best way to deal with these situations is for the signing team to give up a compensatory pick back to the team losing the player. Eliminating the draft seems unrealistic and would cause lots of problems.

A few years ago a NY Ranger prospect died and the league provided a compensatory pick... Which seemed a bit nuts to me, but apparently there is some situations where this happens. When the Devils had a prospect killed n hat Russian plane crash that killed the entire Lokomotiv team we did not get a pick... Not sure exactly why but there was some difference in the rules... But my point is there could be ways to address this.

Currently teams only receive a compensatory pick if unable to sign a first round draft pick. As for the Rangers prospect, they requested a compensatory pick and the league decided to give them one. Since that the GMs voted to add a rule that you get a compensatory pick if a prospect dies before you are able to sign them.

Those are just rumours though, he's not A UFA until the 15th. I think he's still property of the sabres and cant talk to anybody right now.
